Potential behavior if the interviewer or candidate is using iOS call screening

Apple iOS has a new call screening feature with certain settings enabled by default and certain settings optional.

In this article, we'll look into how those settings can impact BrightHire. The short answer is that the default settings do work with BrightHire’s phone calling system, but some of the other settings can result in complications to our call recording flow.

Default settings

Call Filtering

  • Unknown callers [default off]

  • Spam [default on]

  • Screen Unknown Callers (select one of the below options)

    • Never [default setting]

    • Ask reason for calling (call screening)

    • Silence

Outcomes for each setting

  • Call filtering

    • Unknown callers

      • The candidate is unlikely to save the recruiters phone number and the phone call would go directly to voicemail. This would be the same with a direct dial from a cell phone.

      • Texting before calling is a possible solution.

    • Spam

      • We do not go straight to voicemail unless the number is recognized as spam by the carrier, register for Twilio's Trust hub to reduce spam labeling. This is likely the same spam mechanism as before the screening feature came out.

  • Screen Unknown Callers

    • Never = no change

    • Ask reason for calling = iOS answers and asks the reason for calling

      • With BH explicit calling consent ON

        • Our system will recognize the call screener as voicemail and will hang up immediately.

      • With BH explicit calling consent OFF (our default)

        • iOS will answer the call and ask why we are calling while we are playing the disclaimer, we will connect the call, and the recruiter will hear a beep before being dropped into the empty call. If the recruiter speaks the iOS call screening feature will forward their message to the recipient.

    • Silence = same as call filtering “unknown callers”

      • The candidate is unlikely to save the recruiters phone number and the phone call would go directly to voicemail. This would be the same with a direct dial from a cell phone.
