Dig deeper with follow-up questions
Your follow-up questions are a clear strength, helping to clarify candidate responsibilities and encourage deeper insights into their experience.
EXAMPLE 1:
Situation: You asked a clarifying follow-up about the candidate's responsibilities on a project: "So you worked, I guess specifically on like the Python services that actually facilitated a lot of what you just described." 1
Benefit: This approach helps candidates provide more relevant and detailed information about their technical contributions.
EXAMPLE 2:
Situation: You followed up to clarify the candidate's involvement with the front end, distinguishing their specific contributions: "...you mentioned that the front end dashboard was sort of like a different project for like a different set of engineers. So there was no real like front end involved in the, the piece that you've touched."
Benefit: This helps ensure an accurate understanding of the candidate's role and experience.
Respond thoughtfully to candidate answers
You consistently acknowledged candidate responses with affirmations and positive feedback, creating a supportive interview environment.
EXAMPLE 1
Situation: After the candidate described their project, you responded with encouragement: "Okay, no, that sounds great." 3
Benefit: This behavior reassures candidates and helps them feel comfortable sharing more.
EXAMPLE 2
Situation: You responded positively to the candidate's explanation about user acquisition: "...finding like the right users for a product like this could be a challenge in itself, but it sounds like you actually had easy access. That's awesome. Yeah,"
Benefit: Positive reinforcement encourages candidates to elaborate and fosters a more engaging conversation.
